National Airlines, established in 1934, was an early casualty of Deregulation when they were acquired by Pan Am. The latter airline sought a domestic network to supplement it’s renowned international services.

National’s “Sun King” logo was very distinct, and today is evocative of air travel in the 1970s.

National’s jet fleet was diverse, from short-hop 727s, to transcontinental DC-8s and DC-10s, right up to pond-jumping 747s. Quite notable is that during the 70s, most of their planes bore female names. This, coupled with their innuendous “Fly (Female Name), Fly National” ad campaign, raised the hackles of feminist groups.

Reno Air operated rear-engined McDonnel-Douglas MD-80s and newer MD-90s. This particular MD-90 had a special livery with an orange wedged into the “O”, to celebrate their service to John Wayne Orange County Airport.
